DDNS Dynamic DNS Services |

DNS
The Domain Name System (DNS) provides the mechanism for translating
internet domain names into numeric
Internet Protocol (IP) address. The DNS makes using TCP/IP-based
applications much more friendly by enabling users to specify network
locations by name rather than number.
The Domain Name System (DNS) also provides infrastructure for distributing the database
of address to name mappings throughout the internet.
The Internet Corporation
For Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN is responsible for
managing and coordinating the DNS to ensure universal redundancy.
ICANN is the global, non-profit, private-sector coordinating body
acting in the public interest. ICANN ensures that the DNS continues
to function effectively by overseeing the distribution of unique
domain names. Among its other
responsibilities, ICANN oversees the processes and systems that
ensure that each domain name maps to the correct IP address.
At the core of the DNS are computers (root servers) to be exact. They
are coordinated by Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbres. These
servers provide resolution for Top Level Domains TLD's. In an
Internet address such as dyndnsservices.com the .com part is known
as a Top Level Domain, or TLD. The root servers contain all the Top Level Domain
registries: the global registries such as .net, .org, etc. and
the location specific registries such as .ca (Canada).
The root servers store Name Server information for a Top Level
Domain Name TLD. when an internet address such as dyndnsservices.com
is queried the root servers will return dyndnsservices.com
Authoritative Name Servers Internet Protocol/IP addresses. In turn
the revolver or ISP DNS Server will query the Authoritative Name
Server to determine an Internet Protocol/IP address for
dyndnsservices.com, and in turn pass this information on to the end
user.
Dynamic DNS or DDNS
Think of the phone system. When you dial a number, it rings at a
particular location because there is a central numbering plan that
ensures that each telephone number is unique. The DNS works in a
similar way. If telephone numbers or domain names were not globally
unique, phone calls or e-mail intended for one person might go to
someone else with the same number or domain name. Without
uniqueness, both systems would be unpredictable and therefore
unreliable.
Having a Dynamically assigned IP addresses is allot like having to
change your phone number once a day, if other people need to connect
to your computer they would have no way of knowing your current
number. Imagine if the phone company changed your number twice a day
people would have a hard time calling you.
Not everyone can have their own static IP address. There ISP, cable
company, or whoever, might let them have a dedicated IP, but they'll
probably charge extra for it.
Dynamic DNS comes into play when a internet user either wishes to
save the money he or she would spend on a static IP address, or is
unable to acquire a static IP address from there ISP. Working much
like an old style phone operator. Dynamic DNS enables a user to
update a DNS server automatically each time there IP changes. So
anyone who wants to connect to the users computer can nearly always
reach his or her server by entering the users domain name. The whole
process works despite the changing IP addresses. Dynamic DNS allows
the end user to run a fully functional internet server despite
changing IP addresses.
Dynamic DNS DDNS in laymen's terms
Need
additional information on Dynamic DNS-DDNS services
I suspect many of you are already familiar with what a Dynamic DNS Service
is and what it does. For those of you who are not, I will do my best
to describe in "layman's terms" the service and what it provides
internet users world-wide.
I will begin with a simple scenario. Jack our fictitious computer
user. Has recently decided to build a web site for his online
business activities. Jack has contacted many web hosting providers
trying to find the best prices, but finds that to implement his
planned web site will require many features that are very costly
"far beyond Jacks budget" , Jack contacts his local Broadband
provider, thinking that he can host his web site at home and have
all the features he could ever want. He is paying for internet
anyway right? Jack finds that the Broadband provider also wants a
lot of money, even more than the web hosting providers in some
cases, for a static IP address, which is crucial to host his web
site at home.
At this point you would think Jack is out of options, but he is not.
In fact, Jack is about to save hundreds, in some cases. a thousand
or more a year by using a Dynamic DNS Service.
Let's peer into the future here a bit and imagine that you have
already purchased DDNSServ and are yourself providing the Dynamic
DNS Service that Jack will use. A Dynamic DNS Service offers anyone
in the world, regardless of how they connect to the internet, the
ability to have a Domain Name, a .com, mapped to their IP address at
any given time despite the dynamic nature of most ISP assigned
addresses.
Jack has found your website and has quickly realized that you have
the answers to all his needs, for a fraction of the cost. Jack then
downloads and configures your provided client software, and
instantly turns his home computer into an internet server.
Some other examples of things you can do with Dynamic DNS service
are listed below. Your users will have the ability to have support
personnel, employees, etc... access their networks for things such
as connecting to a client's computer system through remote access,
enabling VPN's between branches, keeping track of branch office
print servers, controlling and running mail servers, running web or
FTP servers, running online video conferencing software, talking
over the internet with voice conferencing, etc...
with our software suite, your future customers will find there is
often no need to pay the, sometimes huge, fees associated with
running their own internet server. They can conduct business, host a
personal website, or just host their own email server. By using your
service, your customer's home computer can instantly be an Internet
Server. The possibilities are truly unlimited..
